Poor drainage on both the inside and outside of your home can cause moisture to build up around the foundation. This pressure can cause walls to bow or crack and water to leak into your basement. Hydrostatic pressure needs to be released for the pressure and water to escape.
The soil can become to dry this loss of moisture causes subsidence where the soil shrinks and drops down. As it shrinks, there is a loss of support under the foundation which can lead to shifting and cracks in your foundation walls
